Research and Planning - Music Magazine Drawn Drafts

These are the first drafts of my music magazine, they are a rough copy of how I would like my magazines final product to look. I have decided that on the front cover my main photo will be black and white and of a female. This will be a long shot, whilst my masthead will be of a gold colour with a black background and the rest of the writing on the cover will be white. The lines represent where the text shall be, the barcode shall be in the bottom left corner and I shall have a quote underneath the masthead that is from the article on the double page spread.
My contents page shall contain two photo's. One shall be a mid-shot of the person that is also on the front cover and the other shall be medium-long shot of a different person. In the top right corner shall be a masthead written in the same font as that of the one on the cover saying 'contents page.' The lines represent where my subtitles/coverlines will be located. The background of this page will be white, the text shall be black, the masthead will again be gold and the photo's shall be coloured this time as opposed to black and white.
The final photo is of how I expect my double page spread to look. It shall contain two photo's of the person that is on the cover, however one will be only focusing on their shoes so it shows the costume and attire an RnB artist will normally wear - the second photo will be either a close-up or mid shot of their face whilst they are laughing and looking directly into the camera. To the middle left of the page shall be a quote from the article and above that shall be the 'artists' name and a headline for the article.

Research and Planning - First Podcast

Research and Planning - Costume and Prop List

The props and costume I shall be using for my front cover and double page spread model are as follows;

Outfit -
White shirt - I have chosen this because it will go with the colours I have used throughout the magazine as part of my three colour rule (white, black and gold).
American Apparel disco pants - I have chosen these because they are a fashionable, desirable high street and designer item at the time of me making this magazine.
Gold necklace - this has been chosen as it also fits into the gold section of my colour scheme.
Pair of high tops - these seem like a good idea for me to incorporate as they are fashionable and many current RnB artists wear them at this moment in time.

Hair and make-up -
Eye make-up will be dramatic, smoky
Hair will be backcombed and curly - maybe tied up.

I will only be using one prop and this is a phone, this is because it is an essential at the moment for much of my audience - which is teenagers.

The outfit for my contents page model will be as follows:

Addidas jacket - I have chosen this because they are seen as quite urban and a famous brand.
Nike blazers - I have chosen this type of shoe because they are currently in fashion with many people and have been seen being worn by celebrities.

Research and Planning - Equipment and Software List

The equipment I shall be using for my music magazine will include;

SLR Camera - this shall be used to take a high quality photo of the model.
Model - to be used on my front cover for the main photo and also on the article.
InDesign (Apple app) - I shall use this to create the double page spread article inside the magazine.
Photoshop (Apple app) - I shall use this tool to create the background of the front page and put my model onto it.
Printer - for the finished product.
Dafont.com - I shall use this website to determine a masthead font.
Apple Mac computer - I shall use this to create all my work on.

Research and Planning - Audience Questions and Video

I have prepared a questionnaire of 5 questions in which I shall ask people in my class and record their answers using a high quality camera. Their answers and my evaluations of them are as follows -

Question 1 - What do you think of the colour scheme?
I got a fairly positive review from this question, my audience said that the colours are interesting, work well together and will stand out, this has made me decide I shall definitely be using black, white and gold.

Question 2 - Do you think the layout is appropriate?
I also got a positive mix of answers for this, as my audience said it was clear, organised and easy to read, I shall most likely keep my front cover and contents pages the same, but may change my double page spread slightly.

Question 3 - Do you think the amount of pictures on the double page spread is appropriate?
I got mixed answers for this one, two of the people said they thought it needed perhaps one more but one said it was enough as the double page spread is more focused on text as opposed to the layout.

Question 4 - What coverlines should I put on my front cover and contents page?
The people I interviewed suggested things such as information about new songs, articles about fashion and make-up, information about different celebrities and artists. This has given me some good ideas to add.

Question 5 - Do you like the name exclusive?
My results for this question were positive opinions, they said it they liked it because it was interesting, worked with this genre well and is different from other magazines.

Research and Planning - Double Page Spread Analysis

This is my double page spread analysis taken from the magazine 'Vibe'. The article features the hip-hop icon Wiz Khalifa. Although it doesn't completely fit into the genre I am following - which is RnB - I have chosen it anyway as the genre's can often be easily mistaken and dip in and out of one another. Another reason I have for choosing this article is that it includes a fairly large amount of features I can pull apart and analyse.
Firstly the photo of the celebrity used is a close-up showing his face and partially; his shoulders. In the photo we can see he is smoking. In general these days smoking is often perceived to be negative, and also associated with the whole imagine of rappers. Linking to the photo of him smoking is the subtitle of the article 'How High?' This connatates that the celebrity could be smoking the drug Marijuana - a highly controversial topic. Due to this being an illegal drug this drastically makes the audience of the magazine much smaller. I would expect the audience now to only include teenagers - because of things such as the British television programme 'Skins' centring around partying and drug taking whilst being of college age.
Another thing we can see in this photo is the fact that the subject seems to have a lot of tattoo's - another thing we often associate with teenage rebellion (even though they are becoming more popular with a range of age groups). Tattoo's are also associated with the stereotype of what we imagine rappers too be like, and the representation we receive from this is of rappers all fitting into the stereotype.
The layout of the article is simple, with the photo taking up the whole left page and two columns towards the bottom of the right hand side page. The two columns are neat, but also wide. This shows that the article will make for easy reading rather than lots of long columns. The typography used at the top of the page or the title says 'WK' standing for Wiz Khalifa. The colours of this title are black and orange, the orange exactly matching the shade of orange on our celebrity's hat and thus creating a link. The way the title is wrote looks big and bold and also the contrast in colours subtly draws the readers attention to it, so that if you were flicking through the magazine quickly your attention would be drawn to this article and make you more inclined to read it. The colour scheme of this article is very plain, however the black and white make the orange look very dramatic and 'pop' out to you.

Research and Planning - Music Contents Page Analysis

My contents page analysis has been taken from the magazine "Vibe'. We can tell it is from the genre of RnB due to a number of things. Firstly the most obvious aspect being the main long shot photo used of the recognisable celebrity Kanye West, known for his work in the music RnB and Rap industry. We can tell the magazine fits into the genre of RnB from the colour scheme used - the black and white colours used together are often seen to be quite stylish and smooth, this could be one of the ways used to describe how the music itself sounds.
The target audience of this magazine seems to me to be the later teenage years such as 16-19. I receive this impression due to the fact this contents page contains cover story-lines I would expect that age group to be interested in, such as fashion, and also I can tell this from the use of Kanye West. This is because his music is normally aimed at this age group and older. Also linking to Kanye West and his music; one of the coverlines is named 'Heartbreak Hotel' which could relate to his album called '808's & Heartbreak.'
The layout of the magazine is fairly simple. At the top centre of the page is a large V identifying and matching the contents page to the masthead and title 'Vibe' on the front cover. Along the side of the page are the coverlines and page numbers of the magazine in which they are contained. The picture is located right in the middle of the page showing the importance of this person. Also due to his positioning we receive the impression that the magazine centres around him, often the case when celebrities are the main feature of a magazine.
Various features of this celebrity's persona connatate his wealth and importance. Firstly the costume he is wearing is that of a smart coat, perceived as formal and also businesslike. The smart way he is dressed gives the reader ideology he has a high-up status in the media industry and demands power. The camera shot used to capture this photo is a medium-long shot. This enables the reader to have a close view of the person without getting very near and connatates that whilst taking part in an interview we as readers will be kept at arms length. This distance can connatate that whilst the public are often not allowed near people of high up status due to bodyguards, etc, and this is also the case for Kanye West - again showing his power. His facial expression is somewhat moody and un-friendly - relating to the dark aspect of his music.

Research and Planning - Music Magazine Font Examples

These are some of the font samples I have chosen to use for my music magazine masthead. I have selected them because I think they could work well with the genre and also appeal to the audience. The first font example is called 'King Cool KC' and I think this could be a good font to use as it is young and funky. The second font is named 'Accents (euro)' and I think this could be appropriate as it is simple, bold and good for the genre idea of 'RnB'. The final font example I have showed is called 'Sketch Book' and I like this font because it appeals to younger audiences and looks good.

Research and Planning - Music Magazine Analysis

The first example I am analysing as an example to my magazine is from 'XXL'. This magazine covers the genres of 'RnB' and 'Hip-Hop' and we receive this impression through usage of the main colours and the photo of the people on the cover. Firstly the masthead is in the top left corner, and is of the colours white and red. The positioning of the masthead shows the importance and relevance of the magazine, as audiences normally look at the top left corner before anything else due to the fact most people read items left to right rather than any other way.
These colours are used because they are eye-catching and  make the magazine stand out to the audience, also being a famous magazine, this logo/masthead will be easily recognisable and identifiable, especially if this is the colour scheme usually used by them as it will be associated with this company. The colour red is an intense colour and is often the most noticeable and recognised colour - the use of colour on this magazine coverline could link to the two people on the cover (whom are positioned directly next to each other) and hint there is some sort of emotional link between the two people, and makes the reader wonder if there is some sort of romantic history between the two.
The photo on the cover is a two-shot, meaning the camera shot features two people in it, and is also a medium long shot. This connatates to the audience the idea of getting to know the people on a personal level, but not completely as the short distance from the camera creates the effect we will not find out everything completely, that they will keep some things to a personal basis. The facial expressions on the people who we see are fairly serious. The woman's expression shows her looking directly at the camera in a cold kind of way that could be represented as seductive. This creates an idea of power and independence on the woman's behalf, we receive the impression she has made her own money and success. The facial expression of the man is similar to the woman's - however his is more warmer and makes him look friendlier. The direct eye contact with the camera gives the impression he is fairly relaxed and makes you wonder if he is more used to the attention and whether that doing magazine photo shoots are more familiar to him. Directly looking into the camera with a neutral but somewhat friendly expression gives the audience the idea of him being honest, and that we shall find out a lot from him in this magazine.

My second example comes from the magazine 'Vibe' from the genre 'RnB'. We can tell this from various things used in the mise-en-scene. Firstly the colours used are simple and if looked at alongside the photo can connatate elegance. Black and white are often colours used for posh events, like black ties and suits - which is also the costume of the person in the photo. The way he is dressed and surrounded by the colours show simplicity and wealth: as suits are often associated with the idea of successfulness and money.
The masthead on this magazine is a bold, bright colour of red. This attracts attention easily in the respect that we look straight at it. The word 'VIBE' completely stands out in comparison to the rest of the magazines black and white theme, and the colour red is also associated with danger - if we look at one of the coverlines  it says 'gangster for life.' This is also written in the colour red, emphasising the idea of danger and gangsters.
The photo of the person is a mid shot, displaying his face and shoulders. Because of the close proximity of the shot we can see clearly and directly into his eyes, showing the seriousness and power behind his facial expression. This tells the audience that the character in this shot is serious, and powerful (again, link to the costume). This shows the person in the shot is powerful and could potentially have a lot of resources behind him.

My final example and analysis of a music magazine cover is of 'Vibe' once again. This magazine uses 3 colours, which are yellow, black and white. These are to some extent quite neutral colours, as black and white are quite often partnered with each other and the yellow can represent and appeal to both genders without being more biased to one than the other. The masthead is in the colour white; this stands out completely against the black background and is often related to the idea of perfection. This gives the magazine the impression of godly-ness and makes the magazine seem very appealing. The use of the colour gives the magazine a bold/stand out representation, making it seem better than the others. The photo of the man is a halfway between a medium long shot and a mid shot. This enables us to see his shoulders and part of his body, and from this we see he looks strong and manly. To the audience this can represent his strength, and suggests the large amount of impact he has made on the music industry. Also on his t-shirt is written 'unstoppable', those that are fans of this artist they will know that this is the name of one of his songs and those that don't will simply relate it to the general meaning of the word which is quite positive. The rest of his costume fits into the general idea of what a rapper would wear, such as the fitted cap and baggy t-shirt.

Research and Planning - Music Magazine Research Collage

This post is my research and planning collage - used to show the types of musicians I will feature and base my magazines on. The genre I am planning on creating is 'RnB' and 'Hip-Hop' and I shall construct my magazine to fit into this genre by taking ideas from analysing the magazines 'Vibe' and 'XXL'.
